Individuals Discontinuing Slimming Jabs Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study reveals that patients who discontinue popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a major medical journal points out that while overweight individuals can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"People using such drugs need to be informed of the potential of quick weight regain when the treatment ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain means a return to starting mass within about 18 months.

Weighing Treatments

The study, which reviewed dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Scientists note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically see a less rapid creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists propose the way of the injections explains the accelerated rebound.

These medications copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."

An Ongoing Issue?

Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals argue that, due to the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often ongoing.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have stopped the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced something activating and I was suddenly starving," recalled an individual.

This challenge is worsened if users have not established permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Significant Use

Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing behavioural support.
